KUCHING, May 24:  Low lying parts of Marudi town are inundated with flood waters.

Marudi assemblyman Datu Dr Penguang Manggil said while over the last few days, areas within Marudi District were flooded, today the flood waters have reached Marudi town itself.

Low lying parts of the town area such as Kampung Narum and Kampung Dagang are flooded.

“Presently, parts of Marudi town are flooded. However, streets are still passable and flood waters have yet to rise up to the five-foot way.

“At Kampung Narum and Kampung Dagang, though both suffer flooding, roads are still passable,” Penguang told DayakDaily.

On the cause of the floods, Penguang said that was because flood waters from the high grounds are now flowing to the low-lying areas of the north Sarawak.

“Bario, Mulu and Long Lama had just experienced unusual severe flooding never witnessed before over the last few decades.

“Water level have subsided and flood waters are now flowing to the low-lying areas, resulting in flooding at Marudi area,” said Penguang who is also Local Government and Housing Assistant Minister.

As of last Friday, Miri Divisional Disaster Management Committee has received reports of 17 areas in Marudi District affected by floods while six villages in Telang Usan District including Telang Usan Town were also affected due to rising water levels in Sungai Baram and heavy rain since Wednesday.

Mulu Sub-District and Bario Sub-District (Bario Sentral, Long Banga, Long Lellang, Long Seridan) were also reported to be severely affected due to flooding. — DayakDaily
