KUCHING, July 11: Sarawakians need to look on the bright side when deliberating on the erection of the tallest Sarawak flagpole and construction of the new Astana building, says Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He noted that a video clip which recently went viral on social media depicted the Sarawak flag on the said flagpole in torn condition, prompting many netizens to leave negative and cynical criticism describing it as “short-lived”.
Following this, Abdul Karim revealed that the flagpole has yet to be officiated as it is still on trial.
“At the moment, it is not just the flagpole that we are building—it is the whole complex. For now, the flagpole is still on trial including the material used for the Sarawak flag.
“There are bound to be hiccups and things that need to be improved. Likewise, the flag,” he said during a press conference held at Baitulmakmur II Building here today.
He further said if the flag was indeed torn, it can be changed.
Abdul Karim also said the same good will should be applied to the Sarawak government’s intention to construct a new Astana to replace the old building which was built during the White Rajah era.
“I would definitely object (new Astana construction) if we don’t have the means.
“It is similar to the context of a household where if we have savings worth RM20,000 but intended to buy an expensive car, I will object that decision unless you have RM500,000.
“However, our (Sarawak) reserves are so big that we can even set up a sovereign fund so (I see) nothing wrong in building up Astana and as we go, we are building up iconic buildings, waterfronts as well as a centre of performing arts for the people to enjoy,” he added.
Abdul Karim advised critics to look at things positively as he pointed out that attention should not be given only to building hospitals and schools.
Earlier, DBKU has clarified that the Sarawak flag was not torn but it was in a folded condition due to being wet after the rain. — DayakDaily
