MIRI, Aug 26: The State Disaster Management Committee will take long-term preventive measures to manage haze and peat soil fires in this division, including collaboration with the landowners, disclosed Deputy State Secretary Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik.
He said the haze management and peat fires preventive plan will be announced soon by the committee chairman who is also Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Ik Pahon was met this morning during a brief visit to the Tudan watchtower.
“The plan would including collaborations with the landowners within the affected area during the peat fires (in Kuala Baram),” he disclosed.
When asked further on the preventive solutions, Ik Pahon said amongst others, they planned to have a smart-partnership between the landowners as well as plant short-term crops to minimise the threat of fire in peatland,
“Miri has experienced these issues (haze and peat fires) since I was Miri district officer in 2000 and left in 2005. I recall we already started the initiative and hopefully we will develop the plan and collaborate with the landowners,” he said.
