KUCHING, Oct 1: Locals in Samarahan have expressed frustration over the lack of progress in the infrastructure development provided by the government, said Pending assemblywomen Violet Yong.
According to Yong, she was informed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development in December last year that there would be a ferry service with a 24-car capacity expected to commence operation across Sungai Samarahan at Kampung Beliong in March, 2021 instead of constructing a bridge.
She said such news had been much welcomed by the local community, especially those in Kampung Beliong, as it would have helped boost the local tourism, as well as the cottage industry.
“However, we have received feedback from the local folks that nothing has progressed since the announcement last year and it is only six months away from the much anticipated commencement of the ferry service which is scheduled to be in March next year. Obviously, the project is not in progress as planned and thus; very much delayed,” she said in a press statement, today.
Yong stated that it had always been the wish of the Beliong people that the government could construct a bridge over Sungai Samarahan to improve connectivity between Kuching, Samarahan and Beliong.
She also pointed out that such a request had fallen on deaf ears despite the fact that Beliong people had always given their unwavering support to the ruling government in every state and general elections for the past 57 long years.
“Given the fact that the government is of the view that ferry service is sufficient to serve the area, it is hoped that the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development can keep the people updated on the proposed date where this ferry project can kick start,” she added. — DayakDaily
