KUCHING, Nov 11: A 41-year-old local woman lost RM56,000 after falling victim to an online phone scam on Sept 4, in which she was threatened over a false insurance claim.

Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the victim received a call from a man claiming to be Faizal Madnoor from Etiqa Insurance.

“The suspect told the victim that her personal information had been used to make a false insurance claim of RM68,000 at KPJ Damansara Hospital in Petaling Jaya for the period June 10 to 16, 2025. He then threatened her, saying she would face serious consequences if the matter was not resolved,” he revealed in a statement today.

When the victim denied the allegation, the call was transferred to another individual claiming to be Sergeant Mohd Remi from Bukit Aman Police Headquarters.

The so-called officer told her she was involved in money laundering and instructed her to make payments to settle the case.

The victim made four transfers to four different bank accounts, totalling RM56,000, before realising she had been scammed.

She later informed her husband and lodged a police report.

From Jan 1 to Nov 10 this year, Alexson highlighted that the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of Kuching Police Headquarters recorded 91 cases of similar scams, with total losses amounting to RM4.66 million.

Alexson urged the public to remain vigilant, terminate suspicious calls immediately and safeguard personal and banking information.
