KUCHING, July 20: A horror film titled ‘Sumpahan Jerunei’ which showcases the uniqueness of Melanau art, culture and heritage will be shown in cinemas throughout Malaysia and Brunei from July 27.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the film will also be shown in Cambodian cinemas from Sept 11.
“Needless to say, we are proud that filming was done 100 per cent in Sarawak including the original location of Jerunei in Kampung Tellian Mukah, with the uniqueness of the Melanau culture, especially the ‘jerunei’, being the focal point of this movie. Filming was also done in Siburan and Kuching.
“I believe the Melanau culture, especially in Mukah, is capable of boosting tourism and the economy, especially in drawing foreign tourists within the region,” he said when attending the premier of the movie which was held at Golden Screen Cinemas, The Spring Shopping Mall here today.
According to the synopsis of the film, it tells the story of the Melanau people’s past history which is full of mystery, especially related to the burial customs of the nobles of the people.
He added that during the Paris Film Awards in February, the film received the Best Feature Film Award.
“It was followed by five more awards at the Florence Film Awards in March namely the Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Music and Best Producer,” he said.
The film was written and directed by Jason Chong and stars Bront Palarae, Uqasha Senrose and Mohd Syafie Naswip. — DayakDaily
