KUCHING, Sept 4: Local contractors have been cautioned against the practice of selling contracts after securing projects.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan stressed that such a practice is not a sustainable way for growth.
Instead, he urged Bumiputera contractors to seize available opportunities by building capacity and forging ethical partnerships that will strengthen their capabilities.
“To grow, do not take the easy way out. If we want to collaborate with other contractors, yes, partnerships can be formed. And from there, we learn and expand. That is the proper way to grow. So, if such practices happen, I hope they will not continue,” he told reporters after officiating the SME Community Outreach Programme (SCOP) here on Wednesday (Sept 3).
He pointed out that various financial facilities are accessible for contractors with valid agreements, including support from institutions such as CIMB.
The Sarawak government, he stressed, remains committed to empowering local contractors to deliver development projects on schedule.
“There are many opportunities. But to realise them, we must build capacity to implement all these projects. There are indeed plenty of projects,” he added.
On a related note, he revealed that Sarawak’s Trade and Tourism Office in Pontianak is still in the process of identifying a suitable location, with the aim of opening by next year at the latest. — DayakDaily
