KUCHING, April 2: Chairman of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Lo Khere Chiang says the council will not entertain requests from dog owners to have their pets returned to them once they are caught by the council, unless they pay the compound.

He said said the pets will only be returned on the condition that the owners pay the compound within 24 hours.

Lo pointed out that the owners must register their pet dogs which have been caught by the council and must be issued with the required tags before paying the compound before the dog is returned.

“I have received phone calls from the public saying their pets have been caught and they want them (dogs) back.

“But I want to stress here that we will not entertain such requests, not until they register their pets (dog) and have them vacccinated,” he pointed out today at a mass rabies vaccination, licencing and microchipping exercise at Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) headquarters in Semenggok, here.

Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, pointed out that the council will have no choice but to put the caught dogs to sleep, if they are not claimed within 24 hours.

“We are serious about this because the State is still under the threat of rabies and the life of the people are at stake,” he said.

He appealed to pet owners to be more responsible and not let their dogs to roam around freely.
