Life comes to standstill in Kanowit as floods worsen

Water levels are at knee-height in the town centre.

KANOWIT, Sept 15: All shops except a few coffeeshops are closed today as the flood situation worsens.

This is the second time this month that floods have hit the town, as well as Kapit and Sibu.

Machan assemblyman Allan Sidi Gramong, when contacted, said the water level was between one to five feet high.

“Some roads such as Jalan Penyulau are cut off to motorists as the road is under 5ft of water. The flood is making life difficult for townsfolk as business activity is affected while people including farmers could not work,” he said.

People could not travel out especially to Sibu as Jalan Penyulau is the worst affected.

“I hope the situation will improve in the next 2 to 3 days. This is something which we could not predict as it is mother nature. I hope the people will be patient, but play safe and look after their belongings,” he said.

As there is no evacuation centre yet, Allan hoped the State Disaster Management Committee would consider setting them up to assist the victims.

“The evacuation centre is something that we need urgently now though we have yet to ascertain the number of flood victims,” he said.

Allan added that the town was also hit by floods of this magnitude last year and 10 years ago. — DayakDaily
