MIRI, Oct 20: Minister for Transport Sarawak Dato’ Sri Lee Kim Shin is of the opinion that an additional fire station needs to be built in the district to cater to the growing population here.

He expressed this on Wednesday during a press conference held in Miri after attending the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) 2020 Excellent Service Award (APC) and ‘Pingat Kebesaran Jabatan’ presentation ceremony.

“Now that we have a Bomba sub station in KM4 Jalan Lutong-Kuala Baram (the northern zone of Miri), I hope that another Bomba station can be built to cater to the southern zone of Miri which covers areas such as Tukau and Bakam,” Lee opined.

As Sarawak’s second largest city after Kuching, there’s a dire need for another fire station to be built in Miri, Lee said.

Also present at the press conference were Bomba Malaysia director-general Dato’ Sri Mohammad Hamdan Wahid, Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting, Bomba Sarawak director Khirudin Drahman@Hussaini, State Fire and Rescue assistant director Tiong Ling Hii and Bomba Miri Zone 6 chief Supt Law Poh Kiong.

Later that day, Lee together with Mohammad Hamdan went to KM4 Jalan Lutong-Kuala Baram to inspect the progress of the construction works of the new fire and rescue sub station, which is 90 per cent complete.

The RM6.6 million building is expected to be completed early next year.
