Landslide triggers 35-metre road collapse, stranding 7 longhouses in Spak, Betong

BETONG, March 12: A section of Jalan Jambu Kerampak-Rantau Lelayang in Spak has collapsed due to a landslide, cutting off the road this morning.

According to the Civil Defence Force (APM) Betong Division, the collapsed section spans approximately 35 metres.

Seven longhouses would be affected, as the road serves as the main access route for residents travelling to schools, hospital, and the nearest market for daily needs.

The alternative route, a logging road, is impassable during the rainy season and is too far for regular use.

Upon arriving at the scene following an alert received at 10.29am, the APM rescue team found that the landslide was caused by a blocked culvert, which failed to withstand strong river currents following heavy rainfall since Tuesday (March 12) evening.

Ongoing monitoring revealed signs of active landslides.

Representatives from the Public Works Department (JKR) Betong and the contractor were present to assess the situation and explore possible solutions.
