KUCHING, Aug 26: The Labour Law Reform Coalition (LLRC) has called out gig economy platform providers for “bullying” workers, accusing them of hypocrisy and resisting to workers protection in their opposition to the proposed Gig Workers Bill 2025.
LLRC deputy president Andrew Lo said the ongoing debate has laid bare industry players’ true end game to maximise profits while avoiding responsibility for workers’ welfare.
“They claim to support efforts to protect gig workers and provide a better safety net, but they are only concerned about some aspects of the bills . They then claim lack of stakeholder consultation.
“Then as predicted and like clockwork, they borrow a page out of traditional employers by spreading fear that cost will go up. Some claim that there is a lack of risk impact assessment. If they is lack of risk impact assessment, then just how do the industry players can claim that there will be an increase in cost and fares and that it will stifle innovations?” Lo questioned in a statement.
To him, it is clear that the industry players are against mandatory contribution like SOCSO and EPF which are supposed to provide a safety net for gig workers.
“Just why should gig platform providers have a competitive advantage over traditional employers who have to make mandatory contributions for their traditional workers?” he questioned further.
Lo expressed disappointment that these mega firms resort to fear mongering and unsubstantiated claims before pointing out that the digital revolution and gig economy is not meant to profit mega industry players the expenses of workers and consumers.
Urging all politicians from both ruling or opposition to support the Gig Workers Bill 2025, he proposed exploring union representation for gig workers to strengthen their voice and safeguard their rights. — DayakDaily
