KUCHING, Sept 29: Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah slammed the actions of a promoter linked to the Air Supply concert that was supposed to take place here last week, describing the last-minute cancellation as ‘kurang ajar’ (rude).
He urged the local organiser to take the matter to court, stressing that legal action was necessary to determine who should be held accountable.
“The organiser here is small and had to liaise through a middle party. If there is a breach of agreement, it should be settled in court,” he told the media after holding a press conference on the ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards (AIFFA) 2025 here today.
Abdul Karim explained that the ministry only played a supporting role, providing seed funding which had not been disbursed since the concert was called off before payment was due.
He noted that officers from his ministry had inspected the venue and found everything in order right up to the day before the concert.
“Everything was ready. At 3am, the notice came that the concert was cancelled. I am upset and frustrated because many people had already spent money and time,” he added.
The minister said Air Supply had performed in Kuala Lumpur prior but failed to continue to Kuching, leaving fans from Brunei, Singapore, and Sabah disappointed.
He added that while the local organiser had committed to refund tickets, those who travelled for the concert also lost money on flights and accommodation.
“This affects our tourism image. I don’t like Sarawakians being treated this way. If needed, I am prepared to give evidence in court,” he asserted.
Australian soft rock duo Air Supply cancelled their highly anticipated 50th anniversary celebration show in Kuching at the last minute on Sept 24, citing operational issues.
Air Supply, in a statement on its official social media, confirmed the cancellation and said: “Unfortunately, our show in Kuching, Malaysia, scheduled for September 24 has been cancelled. We are working to reschedule this show and will let everyone know when a new date is confirmed.” — DayakDaily
