KUCHING, Aug 15: The traffic light pole in front of Batu Kawa Old Bazaar has been fitted with LED lights that are in sync with the traffic lights, making it the first ‘aesthetic traffic signal’ initiative in the city.
In this new innovative traffic light system by Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, the pole lights up and changes colour accordingly with the traffic signal as it turns red, yellow and green.
Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who activated the illuminated traffic light pole yesterday, said the basic aim behind this initiative is to make traffic lights and signals visible to motorists from a good distance, thereby reducing accidents spurred by speeding, disregard for signals or their inadvertent oversight.
“This additional illumination will enhance safety of road users, including speeding vehicles observed frequently on the main road, especially with high flow of traffic.
“Please share your feedback on this LED-illuminated pole lighting for the traffic light,” he said in a post on his Facebook page last night (Aug 14).
This illuminated traffic light pole technology is targeted at increasing traffic safety levels by alerting and increasing the chances of seeing the traffic lights, while also making roads more aesthetically pleasing.
JKR divisional engineer Liew Ming Chek, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai, community leaders and installer Seri Teknik representatives were among those present. — DayakDaily
