KUCHING, Sept 2: The inaugural Sarawak International Band and Orchestra Festival (SIBOFest) 2024 is to be held in Kuching from Sept 17 to 20.

The festival will be held at Lodge Secondary School from Sept 17-19, and the final gala concert will be held on Sept 20 at The Ranyai Ballroom in The Waterfront Hotel.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said over 200 participants from Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan will be performing at the festivals.

“This includes 60 participants from one of the top high school bands in Japan, the Aikodai Meiden High School Symphonic Band, including At Adau, The Band Lab, and many others,” he told a press conference held at Baitulmakmur Building 2 here today.

He said another exciting highlight at the concert is the world premiere of the SIBOFest 2024 theme song, ‘Cat on the Waterfront’, composed by 20-year-old Japanese composer Keigo Makino.

He added that the composition is unique as it is the result of a cross-collaborative effort between a foreign composer and local musicians, based on motifs from a Dayak song, ‘Bampa Lale’ Ame’ Tuyang’.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim said the organisation of SIBOFest 2024 offers a tremendous opportunity to boost the tourism industry by showcasing Sarawak’s cultural richness and artistic talent to the world.

According to him, most of the participants highlighted Sarawak’s unique culture as a key factor in joining SIBOFest, in addition to the music masterclasses.

“This festival offers a distinct blend of activities, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in both professional music training and local experiences ranging from traditional music to authentic cuisine.

“The festival, therefore, provides significant economic benefits by attracting tourists, promoting local businesses, and enhancing Sarawak’s reputation as a cultural destination on the international stage,” he said.
