KUCHING, Dec 22: Along with the opening ceremony, all 17 sporting events allocated to Sarawak for the 34th Southeast Asian Games will be held in Kuching, Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said.
According to a report by Bernama, Abdul Karim said the decision was made by the 2027 SEA Games Organising Committee after careful consideration of multiple logistical and technical factors.
“This decision was made because the SEA Games is a regional-scale sport and many things need to be considered, especially such as logistical factors, accommodation in hotels with certain stars, connectivity, international-class sports facilities and many more.
“If it is a national-level sport, of course any other city in Sarawak can be involved,” he was reported as saying.
The 34th SEA Games is scheduled to take place from Sept 18 to 29, 2027, with Malaysia hosting the Games across four main clusters; Sarawak, Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur.
Sarawak has been assigned as the main cluster and will host the Games’ opening ceremony, as well as 17 sporting events; the highest number among the co-hosting states.
An allocation of RM350 million, announced during the recent Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting, has been set aside to support Sarawak’s hosting responsibilities. The Sarawak Stadium will serve as the venue for the opening ceremony.
During the sitting, Abdul Karim said the funding would be used for the opening ceremony as well as to meet the comprehensive requirements of the 17 sports, including promotional initiatives, training and coordination of the organising workforce, and the provision of sports equipment to ensure compliance with all technical and competition standards set by the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF). – DayakDaily
