KUCHING, March 27: Several key locations in Kuching South will go dark tomorrow night as Kuching South City Council (MBKS) joins the global Earth Hour 2026 movement, with council offices, public facilities, parks, and key locations switching off lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the key locations will include City Hall, Boulevard, Dewan Masyarakat, Song Kheng Hai Hawker Food Centre, Stutong Community Market, Kenyalang Market, Taman Sahabat, Padungan Arch, and White Cat.
“Earth Hour is not just about turning off lights. It is about turning on awareness. It is about changing mindsets, shaping habits, and taking responsibility for our environment.
“We encourage all residents of Kuching South to take part. Switch off your lights for one hour. Spend that time meaningfully, and reflect on how each of us can contribute to a greener and more sustainable future,” he said during a press conference at the MBKS building today.
Commercial centres, hotels, shopping malls, universities, and corporate organisations — including Chagee (Taman Sahabat), Kuching Park Hotel, Imperial Hotel, Kingwood Hotel, Vivacity Megamall, Aeroville Mall, AEON Mall, Farley Mall, Everise Padungan, Boulevard Mall, i-CATS University College, and Ibraco Berhad — will also participate, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainability across the community.
The lights-off in Kuching South comes ahead of the main Sarawak Earth Hour 2026 hosted by Sri Aman District Council tomorrow, officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, showcasing State-level support for climate action.
Meanwhile, MBKS Child Council representative Albee Lim Xin Yu pledged that children in Kuching South will also switch off lights and encourage families to join.
“We pledge that children in Kuching South will take part in Earth Hour by switching off our lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, and encouraging our families and friends to do the same. This small action may seem simple, but together, it can make a big difference.
“We also promise to continue learning, sharing, and taking action to protect our environment, not just for one hour, but every day,” she said. – DayakDaily
