KUCHING, Sept 4: A local man has been sentenced to seven years in prison by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to one count of attempted murder using a sharp weapon in a brawl incident in Matang in August.
Muhammad Aiman Yusri, 20, admitted when the charge was read in front of Sessions Court Judge Musli Abdul Hamid.
According to the charge, he and his accomplice Mohd Khaizorie Wasli, 30, and three others still at large were accused of attempting murder using a sharp weapon against the victim.
The incident occurred in front of a cafe on Jalan Matang off Jalan Tumuk at about 2.19am on August 21, 2023.
They were charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same Code. If found guilty, they could face up to 20 years in prison.
According to the brief facts of the case, around 2.19am on August 21, the police received a call from a man stating that the victim had come to his house seeking help.
The complainant then took the victim, who was believed to have been beaten, stabbed, and injured with a sharp object, to the hospital for further treatment before making a police report.
The police apprehended the accused during separate operations on August 23 and August 29.
It is understood that Muhammad Aiman has three prior records involving drug abuse.
Meanwhile, Mohd Khaizorie pleaded not guilty to the same charge brought against him.
Judge Musli subsequently allowed Mohd Khaizorie to be released on RM10,000 bail with two local sureties.
Additionally, the Court has set a re-mention date for case management on October 9.
The prosecution in the case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim, while the accused was not represented by legal counsel.
On August 21, a video of a brawl at a cafe in Matang went viral on social media when the victim was attacked by five armed men with machetes and hockey sticks.
The cause of the incident stemmed from one of the suspects inquiring about a debt owed by the victim, which the victim denied.
Dissatisfied with the denial, the victim was escorted out of the premises by the suspects and subsequently assaulted with a hockey stick before being struck with a machete. — DayakDaily
