KUCHING, Nov 14: The Kuala Baram Delta Access Channel dredging and deepening project is progressing 2.7 per cent ahead of schedule, with its completion expected to be brought forward from March 2027 to October 2026.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress following a working visit to the project site in Miri today.
“The project is expected to be completed by March 2027. The management and contractor have been instructed to revise the work schedule to meet earlier completion target in October 2026,” he said in a statement today.
During the visit, Uggah received a briefing on the project’s current status, implementation challenges and expected benefits to the local shipping industry and regional economy.

The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak emphasised that the project plays a critical role in improving access and navigational safety for vessels in northern Sarawak, ultimately boosting trade efficiency through Miri Port.
Once completed, the dredging and deepening works are expected to reduce logistics costs and speed up the movement of goods in and out of the port.
JKR Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to providing full technical support to ensure the project continues to run smoothly, adheres to specifications and meets the revised deadline.
The department will also maintain active monitoring and technical coordination to ensure the project delivers positive impact to the people of Sarawak.
Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister of Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi, Batu Danau assemblyman Datuk Paulus Palu Gumbang, Miri Port Authority general manager Serawa Budol, JKR Sarawak director Datu Dr Ir Cassidy Morris and ministry’s port advisor Datuk Ian James were among those present. — DayakDaily
