KUCHING, Aug 1: Special recruitment exercises to address the teacher shortage in Sarawak should not compromise on quality, opined Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin.
In a Facebook post today, Yap highlighted that another issue is the inefficient use of teacher resources due to their involvement in ‘Sekolah Kurang Murid’ (schools with fewer students).
“Perhaps it is time to relook at the current policy on SKM,” he said.
Yap also suggested that the Sarawak government should study Finland’s model, where teachers are highly educated professionals and play a crucial role in a society that values equal opportunities and lifelong learning.
According to him, Finland’s education system, which is based on democratic principles, is considered the best in the world.
He noted that Finland’s high ranking in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) reflects their exceptional reading scores.
“I hope that the relevant ministry will continue to be proactive in developing progressive educational policies.
“These should focus on the efficient utilization of teachers and the enhancement of educational standards and quality, rather than merely increasing the number of teachers and the quantity of A’s students achieve in examinations,” he added. — DayakDaily
