KUCHING, Dec 11: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has urged the Federal Ministry of Education (MOE) to clarify claims circulating online that the passing grade for the Academic Year’s Final Assessment (UASA) has been reduced to 20 per cent.
The UASA, a school-based evaluation system, was introduced in Malaysia to replace the previously centralised national examinations — UPSR for Year 6 students and PT3 for Form 3 students.
Yap highlighted ongoing debates regarding the restoration of UPSR and PT3, sparked by concerns that class-based assessments may be leading to weaker academic outcomes among students.
“Many parents have approached me to express their concerns.
“I urge the MOE to address these issues transparently and provide parents with a clear explanation regarding the allegations that 20 per cent is now considered a passing grade for UASA,” he said in a statement after handing over Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant of RM30,000 to SJK(C) Stampin’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) today.
Despite education being a Federal matter, Yap emphasised the importance of collaboration between Sarawak schools and the Sarawak Government to ensure the success of initiatives such as the Dual Language Program (DLP).
The programme aims to enhance students’ proficiency in English alongside Bahasa Malaysia, equipping them with strong foundations in science and technology to support Sarawak’s development. — DayakDaily
