KUCHING, Feb 2: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin has rejected calls for Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi to resign, saying such demands do not contribute to constitutional governance or national unity.
In a recent statement, he said constitutional principles, including collective Cabinet responsibility, must be applied with accuracy and an understanding of context, rather than interpreted in a way that suppresses legitimate concerns.
According to Yap, Nanta’s remarks were made amid growing political bickering that threatens national harmony and should not be misconstrued as a rejection of Malaysia.
He said the remarks were instead a reminder of the importance of moderation and mutual respect within the federation.
“Collective responsibility ensures orderly governance, but it also operates alongside the federal structure that recognises the rights, voice and position of founding partners such as Sarawak,” he said in the statement.
He also highlighted the approach taken by the Sarawak government under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, which he said has consistently addressed differences through constitutional channels and institutional dialogue.
The assemblyman stressed that debates over resignation risk diverting attention from substantive issues affecting Sarawak, including equitable development, the full implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), and stronger cooperation within the federation.
“The focus should remain on resolving real issues that matter to Sarawak and strengthening unity based on fairness and mutual respect,” he added. — DayakDaily
