KUCHING, Oct 29: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kota Sentosa chairman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin has urged residents to prioritise tangible development and continuity as Sarawak enters a crucial transitional period.
Reflecting on his five-year tenure as Kota Sentosa incumbent, Yap said effective representation should be measured by sustainable local development, practical problem-solving and improvements to residents’ quality of life, rather than political positioning or rhetoric.
He said Kota Sentosa had moved beyond years of stagnation and entered a phase of visible transformation through systematic planning, securing development allocations and maintaining a consistent presence on the ground.
“This was not achieved through slogans or rhetoric, but through systematic planning, securing development funds, and maintaining a constant, constructive presence on the ground to address the daily needs of our residents,” he said in a statement today.
Yap cited several projects implemented under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) as examples of efforts to address long-standing infrastructure issues and improve local amenities.
Among them was the RM2.53 million Taman Happy Valley flood mitigation and drainage upgrade, aimed at resolving persistent flash flooding in the area.
He also highlighted the modernisation of Kota Sentosa Town Square Phase Two and improvements to the drainage system at Jalan Kuching Ranger Depo in Batu 7.
According to Yap, such projects reflected the importance of translating community concerns into practical solutions, particularly in addressing infrastructure deficiencies that affect residents’ daily lives.
“There is a profound difference between pointing out a problem and actually delivering the solution,” he said, in response to political narratives emphasising the role of elected representatives as watchdogs.
He said accountability should not be confined to raising concerns or scrutinising decisions, but should also be reflected in concrete improvements that benefit the community.
“A community thrives when its representation is focused on constructive action. True accountability is demonstrated when critical infrastructure like our local town square is revitalised, neighbourhood drainage systems are modernised, and the quality of life for ordinary citizens is visibly improved,” he said.
With public discussions intensifying over Sarawak’s future direction, Yap called on constituents to assess their representatives based on performance, completed projects and measurable outcomes.
He cautioned that political disagreements should not overshadow the need to address local priorities, particularly infrastructure development and economic resilience.
“Our neighbourhood cannot afford to revert to a cycle where local needs are secondary to political theatre. The choices made today will dictate the pace of our infrastructure growth and economic resilience for years to come,” he said.
Yap urged Kota Sentosa residents to consider the development work carried out in their constituency and support an approach centred on stability, sustained effort and continued progress.
“I encourage everyone in Kota Sentosa to look at the concrete work that has been delivered, and to choose a path anchored in stability, hard work, and continuous progress,” he added. — DayakDaily
