KUCHING, Sept 21: Kenyan athletes once again reigned supreme at the Kuching Marathon, sweeping top honours in the 42km and 21km categories as the 10th edition of the event drew a record 14,150 participants.
In the 42km Male Open, David Rono led a Kenyan clean sweep by winning in 2:26:21 ahead of compatriots Hosea Kogei and David Kipsang.
Abigael Jerop also delivered victory for Kenya in the 42km Female Open with a time of 3:15:19, while Samson Karega Kamau topped the 42km Male Veteran in 2:41:36.
Malaysia’s Lee Siok Chin provided the host nation’s biggest triumph, winning the 42km Female Veteran in 3:18:41, which also earned her the Top National Women title.
Kenya continued their dominance in the half marathon, with Job Minacho Kamonde taking the 21km Male Open crown (1:09:31), Caroline Cherono winning the 21km Female Veteran (1:27:39), and Benard Kiplangat Kibilo leading an all-Kenyan podium in the 21km Male Veteran (1:10:16).
The 21km Female Open went to Malaysia’s Jia Xin Cheng in 1:41:58, while Brunei’s Ruzaini Mahadi broke the Kenyan streak by winning the 10km Male Open in 37:11.
In the 10km Female Open, however, Kenyans Kipyego Millicent (41:37) and Jackline Nzivo claimed first and second places, with Indonesia’s Elsa Supianti in third.
Among Malaysians, Hazarullah Safri emerged as the Top National Men’s finisher, completing the full marathon in 2:46:04.
The prizes were presented by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor, who officiated the ceremony at Padang Merdeka today.
Now in its 10th year, Kuching Marathon featured four categories—42km, 21km, 10km and 5km—and continued to affirm its position as one of the premier long-distance running events in the region.
