KUCHING, Aug 7: Kenyan runners Geoffrey Birgen and Peninah Kigen brought home RM8,000 each after dominating the 42km Men and Women categories in the Bintulu International Marathon (BIM) 2023.
According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today, in the 42km National Men and Women Open categories, Poo Vasanthan and Sally Ann Yap Yuing also took home RM5,000 by finishing ahead of other runners, while the RM2,500 prize money in the 42km Veteran category was bagged by Kenyan runners, Mundi Onesmus and Jane Rotich.
For the 21km Open categories, Charles Munyua Njoki and Rosemary Mumo Katua secured top place and won RM2,000 each, while the 21km Veteran categories saw Muniandy Ramadass (Men category) and Thio Siaw Khim (Women category) walk away with RM1,500 each after finishing in first place.
Following that, finishing first in the 10km categories, Azwan Buning and Hii Win Nie won RM1,000 each after breaking the tape in their respective category.
BIM 2023 saw 3,535 runners with 100 international participants from Kenya, Ethiopia, the United States of America, Canada, South Africa, South Korea, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines.
Runners comepted in six categories, namely the 42km Open, 42km National, 42km Veteran, 21km Open, 21km Veteran, and 10km Open, with each category divided into men’s and women’s sub-categories.
The event started as early as 1am for the 42km category, followed by another release at 3.30am for the 21m category, and 6am for the 10km category.
Apart from that, a 6km ‘Fun Run’ was also held during the event. — DayakDaily
