Kampung Sungai Burung folk yearns for a new bridge, urgently

The old wooden bridge at Kampung Sungai Burung in Siburan needs to be replaced as it is unsafe for cars and light lorries to use.

KUCHING, April 16: A belian bridge built by the villagers in the ‘80’s at Kampung Sungai Burung in Siburan here is in dire need of a replacement with a concrete one as it is now unsafe for cars and light lorries to use.

Sanjan Daik, a political secretary to Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen, revealed in a press release today that the villagers were already raising funds among themselves, with each family contributing a few hundred ringgit for the proposed new bridge.

According to its Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), they needed at least RM20,000 to build a new concrete bridge through gotong-royong by the villagers.

Sanjan visited the villagers last Saturday to present a cheque of RM3,000 on behalf of Chong, who is also Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.

In January this year, Chong had also given the villagers RM3,000 to repair their gravel surface road leading to the village.

The villagers hoped the government could speed up their application to have their village gazetted so that allocation of funds could be made to provide facilities for the villagers. — DayakDaily
