KUCHING, April 6: Kampung Sambir in Samarahan is set to undergo a major transformation through a modern and well-planned village expansion scheme, which will include comprehensive infrastructure such as new roads, public amenities, and a higher-standard football stadium.

Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the development would not only reshape the physical landscape of Kampung Sambir, but also uplift the overall quality of life for its residents.

“This development will improve the people’s quality of life while ensuring the younger generation continues to remain in their hometown instead of migrating to urban areas,” he was quoted as saying by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) when officiating the closing ceremony of the 58th edition of the N.15 Asajaya Unity Cup Football Championship 2026 at Kampung Sambir football field here yesterday (April 5).

Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya assemblyman, added that the planned new stadium would be equipped with floodlights, allowing matches to be held at night and elevating the Unity Cup’s organisation to a more professional level in the future.

Meanwhile, the championship drew 62 teams from across the Samarahan and Kuching divisions.

This year’s edition saw an overwhelming response from supporters, with a large crowd turning up especially for the final match between Abdul Latif Family Team and Camutes FC, underscoring the continued relevance and popularity of the Unity Cup among communities in Samarahan and surrounding areas.

Among those present were Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development Sarawak permanent secretary and patron of Sambir Bistari Football Club Datu Abdullah Julaihi, Samarahan Division deputy resident Rais Ahmat, Asajaya district officer Jerry Zannuddin Bidin, Samarahan district officer Ahmad Abdul Razak, Simunjan district officer Sanuyah Mohamad, Gedong district officer Jamain Wahab, LEA Sports Centre managing director Datuk Raymond Sim Hii Pang, Samarahan Land and Survey Department superintendent Ahmad Raslan Yaiyah, Temenggong of the Malay community in Samarahan Division Chek Bujang, Pemanca of the Malay community in Asajaya district Salleh Kamis, and Kampung Sambir headman and Sambir Bistari Football Club president Lapok Jaafar. — DayakDaily
