KUCHING, April 14: New standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines for commercial and public service vehicles will be introduced by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) next month.

In a Bernama news report, JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said this was to address the recent surge in accidents involving heavy vehicles, especially lorries.

Elaborating on the SOPs, he said it would include stricter actions against commercial vehicle drivers who drive above the speed limit to the point of endangering other road users.

“JPJ is scrutinising and detailing the SOP in collaboration with other stakeholders. We are focusing on vehicles over 7.5 tonnes,” he said.

He said this at a Terengganu JPJ appreciation ceremony and Aidilfitri celebration on April 13.

He added that among the matters being detailed are the banning of such vehicles from driving on the far-right lane, as previously announced by the Ministry of Transport. — DayakDaily
