KUCHING, May 28: The recently signed joint declaration between the Sarawak and federal governments on the State’s oil and gas (O&G) sector sets a commendable precedent for resolving resource-related matters amicably and for mutual benefit, says Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.
In expressing the party’s support, Ting described the agreement as a significant milestone in redefining federal-State relations, particularly in the governance and management of natural resources.
“It is SUPP’s long-standing position that such matters should be resolved through cordial engagement and mutual respect at the negotiating table.
“We strongly support efforts to enhance federal-State cooperation,” he said at a press conference held after the conclusion of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
He also said the agreement exemplifies a collaborative and constructive approach between the federal and State government.
“It sets a commendable precedent for resolving resource-related issues in a manner that is amicable and mutually beneficial,” he added.
Ting who serves as the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, and Piasau assemblyman, further said the PETRONAS-PETROS arrangement is a true “win-win” outcome—one grounded in a shared understanding of and at the same time respecting each party’s rights and responsibilities.
While PETROS gains full authority over the procurement, distribution and sale of natural gas within Sarawak, PETRONAS retains its national role as outlined under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA74).
“The agreement ensures that all of PETRONAS’ existing domestic and international contractual obligations remain intact, thereby preserving stability and investor confidence in Malaysia’s energy sector,” he pointed out.
He also noted that the agreement promotes collaborative development initiatives between PETRONAS and PETROS in key projects, including gas supply pipeline developments under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR), hydrogen production and power generation for green energy initiatives—positioning Sarawak as a regional energy hub in the ASEAN region.
“In essence, SUPP views the joint declaration as a balanced and strategic approach to resource governance—an important step toward realising Sarawak’s aspirations for greater autonomy and equitable development.
“We remain committed to supporting its implementation and to ensuring that its agreed-upon principles are translated into benefits for the people of Sarawak,” he emphasised.
