KUCHING, Sept 11: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will organise its first Anti-Scam Talk on Sept 23 to educate the public in light of rampant scam cases reported in Sarawak.
The talk will be held at the MBKS Auditorium at 2pm, as part of the activities under thr Anti-Scam Campaign initiative.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the talk will be delivered by experts including Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Commercial Crime Department (CCD), Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) officers.
“The first talk will be conducted in the Mandarin language and followed by Bahasa Malaysia and English subsequently.
“Why in Mandarin first? Because according to the statistics given by CCD, the vast majority of scam victims are Chinese from different kinds of background—educated or non-educated, including housewives, retirees, businessmen, undergraduates, teachers, managers, even bankers and professionals such as accountants and doctors,” he told a press conference at headquarters here today.
Wee further said the campaign hopes to create more awareness and alert the public so they will not fall for the scammers’ tricks and psychological tactics.
“Just imagine your hard-earned money in the bank vanished the next day when you wake up in the morning. How would you feel? Victims will suffer inevitable depression, anger, embarrassment and self-blaming, even to the extent of committing suicide in some cases,” he added.
Although the talk is open to the public, those interested in attending are advised to book their seats via 010-6601919 (WhatsApp) due to limited seating in the MBKS Auditorium.
Meanwhile, Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Public Complaint Bureau (SPCB) chief Milton Foo said free movie tickets for the movie “No More Bets” will be given out to the first 200 audience members who participate in the talk.
“Those who participate in the afternoon talk on Sept 23 will be entitled to free tickets for the movie which is scheduled to play on the same evening at TGV, Vivacity Mall at 8.30pm,” he said.
Foo who is the MBKS legal advisor and the free movie ticket giveaway organiser also mentioned that it will be the second time that they are giving away free tickets for the ‘No More Bets’ movie after the first giveaway for a Sept 15 movie screening.
He further thanked the sponsors who contributed to the campaign, namely 38 Yayasan Amal Cinta and Tay Motors Sdn Bhd.
The 2 hour-long ‘No More Bets’ movie is a 2023 Chinese crime thriller film directed by Shen Ao and produced by Ning Hao which tells of persons trafficked overseas and forced to defraud online. It features Lay Zhang, Gina Jin, Yong Mei, and Eric Wang.
Also present during the press conference was newly appointed MBKS deputy mayor Dato Dr Zaiedi Suhaili. — DayakDaily
