KUCHING, Oct 31: The 36-year-old bodyguard accused of being involved in the murder of a young man at an apartment along Jalan Sungai Tapang late last year has been released today.

The suspect, identified as Lu, was earlier remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to assist investigations into the case, which is being probed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

According to court documents, police had previously sought a seven-day remand extension, citing the need for further questioning as Lu’s earlier statements were inconsistent and he was believed to possess information about others involved in the incident.

Lu had been brought before the Magistrate’s Court on September 25 to face a murder charge related to the death of a 22-year-old Francis Chang Ze, who was found dead with slash wounds inside an apartment unit along Jalan Sungai Tapang at about 4.30am on December 1, 2024.

No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. The court had fixed October 31 for mention and denied bail.

Lu, together with 11 other individuals, is accused of being part of an unlawful assembly that led to the victim’s death.

The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 149, carries the death penalty or imprisonment for a term of between 30 and 40 years, along with not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane if the death penalty is not imposed.
