KUCHING, Feb 15: The persistent spread of falsehoods portraying Sarawak as an arrogant entity seeking to establish a “state within a state” is detrimental to Malaysia’s national progress and unity, says Sarawak legal counsel Dato Sri JC Fong.

He emphasised that Sarawak, long regarded as a model of interracial and interfaith harmony, has much to contribute towards fostering national cohesion and human capital development.

However, the propagation of misleading narratives not only misrepresents the State’s intentions but also risks sowing frustration, anger, and distrust between Sarawakians and fellow Malaysians.

“Sarawakians love Malaysia as much as they love their beloved Bumi Kenyalang (Land of Hornbills).

“They want to help build a prosperous, peaceful, and united nation. But such unity must be built on a foundation of mutual respect,” said Fong at the Fifty Shades of Federalism forum held at the Subang National Golf Club today.

He highlighted that safeguarding Sarawak’s special interests and position within Malaysia, as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), is not an act of defiance but a rightful expectation based on historical agreements and constitutional assurances.

“Just respect and safeguard Sarawak’s special interests and position in Malaysia and honour the promises and assurances in MA63, then we (Malaysians) will have a Malaysia that is prosperous and its people united and happy,” he said. –DayakDaily
