KUCHING, June 15: A total of 55 water supply projects costing RM535 million have been implemented in Sarikei Division, and to date, 43 water supply projects costing RM96 million have been successfully completed and addressed water supply issues in several areas of the said division.
According to a press release by Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) Sarawak today, nine projects worth approximately RM234 million are still in the construction phase and are expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2024.
“Furthermore, three projects worth approximately RM204 million are currently in the planning stage, with one project, the Julau Phase 2 Project, expected to be tendered in the first quarter of 2024, and the other two projects still in the process of appointing consultants.
“In addition, 11 water supply projects worth approximately RM881 million have been included on the list of the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12) for government approval, including the Julau Water Supply Project under the allocation of the Sarawak government,” JBALB Sarawak revealed.
The scope of work for the projects includes the installation of new pipelines, construction of high-level tanks and booster pump stations, water treatment plant upgrades, and construction of raw water intakes.
JBALB Sarawak said in addition to improving the existing water supply system, the projects are anticipated to improve the socio-economic status of the local community, stimulate more sustainable economic growth, and ensure a higher quality of life for the residents of Sarikei Division, particularly those living in Julau, Pakan, and the areas of KJD, Maradong, Bintangor, Tanjung Manis, Belawai, and Pulau Bruit.
“The Sarawak government through the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication together with JBALB Sarawak as the implementing agency is very committed to ensuring that the infrastructure and water supply system in Sarikei Division is improved as well as solving water supply issues in several areas in the relevant section.
“In order to guarantee a better and continuous quality of water supply in Sarikei Division, JBALB Sarawak will ensure that the projects that are currently in the implementation stage will be completed within the set time frame.
“The projects are part of the Sarawak Water Supply Grid System which was inspired by the Honorable Premier of Sarawak to solve water supply issues effectively and comprehensively,” JBALB Sarawak added. — DayakDaily
