SIBU, Feb 27: The recent building collapse at Jalan Pahlawan will now be officially classified as a natural disaster and placed under the jurisdiction of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the Cabinet made the decision following a briefing by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang.

“This incident is considered a natural disaster because it was entirely unforeseen, and such events can occur anywhere.

“It can happen in any area with peat soil, not just here,” he explained following a visit to the site today.

Dr Sim explained that while SDMC operates at the State level, the Sibu Division SDMC, chaired by the Sibu Resident, will coordinate local responses and investigations.

The Cabinet has also agreed to appoint structural experts to determine the precise cause of the collapse.

“We need specialists to understand the situation fully, as this has wider implications. The findings will guide future preventive measures,” he added. — DayakDaily
