KUCHING, April 9: The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak has installed support scaffolding at the site of the collapsed outer wall of a century-old shophouse in Jalan Padungan to prevent further damage to the building.
The collapse of the outer wall of the building raised concerns about the safety of the structure and its impact on the surrounding area.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng visited the site again today to meet with JKR officers and receive updates on the ongoing situation.
He expressed optimism that the follow-up work would be conducted thoroughly and efficiently.

In a meeting this morning, Wee also briefed three affected shopowners on the temporary safety measures that are being put in place by relevant authorities.
These measures include the commencement of probing works on the building’s exterior to ensure its stability and gather data for subsequent structural assessments
“Safety remains our top priority. We are taking immediate steps to ensure the safety of the building and surrounding area. The probing works will help us better understand the structure’s condition,” he said in a statement today.

He also advised the affected owners to appoint qualified structural consultants and engineers to professionally evaluate the integrity of the building.
In addition to the ongoing safety measures, Wee reassured the public that MBKS is closely monitoring the situation and working with the property owners to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
He also urged the public to avoid approaching the affected area for their own safety. — DayakDaily
