KUCHING, Sept 13: Two men have claimed trial to charge of attempted murder involving the use of a sharp weapon in a widely-publicised incident on social media that occurred in Matang last August.
Suhaimi Jamani, 28 and Alfitri Abdul Rahman, 25, appeared in the Sessions Court today as both individuals pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read before Judge Musli Abdul Hamid.
According to the charge, both the accused and a man who is still at large were jointly accused of attempting to commit murder using a sharp weapon against 36-year-old victim Azizan Mustafa in a brawl that allegedly took place in front of a cafe in Jalan Matang off Jalan Tumuk, at about 2.19am on Aug 21.
As a result, both of them were charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code, which carries an imprisonment term of up to 20 years.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ruvinasini Pandian did not offer any bail, expressing concern that the defendants might attempt to flee or interfere with the case.
However, the Court allowed both accused to be released on bail with a sum of RM10,000 each, along with a local surety.
During the hearing, Alfitri was represented by lawyer Lim Lian Kee, while Suhaimi was not represented by legal counsel.
The court has set a further mention date for case management on Oct 13.
Earlier, two of the accused that were involved in this case were charged at the Sessions Court on Sept, as one of the accused, Muhammad Aiman Yusri, 20 pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to seven years in prison while the other accused, Mohd Khaizorie Wasli, 30, pleaded not guilty to the charge framed.
According to the brief facts of the case, around 2.19am on Aug 21, the police received a call from a man named Anwar, stating that a severely injured man had come to his house seeking help.
The complainant then took the victim, who was believed to have been beaten, stabbed and injured with a sharp object, to the hospital for further treatment before proceeding to make a police report.
A video of a brawl at a cafe in Matang subsequently went viral on social media when the victim was attacked by five men armed with machetes and hockey sticks.
The cause of the incident stemmed from one of the suspects inquiring about a debt owed by the victim, which the victim denied. Dissatisfied with the denial, the victim was escorted out of the premises by the suspects and subsequently assaulted. — DayakDaily
