MATU, Jan 7: The construction of Jalan Kampung Bawang project in Matu, which began over four years ago and had reached 81 per cent physical progress, will be retendered after the contractor was terminated for failing to complete the work despite being granted multiple extensions.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya said the project had long been classified as a “problematic” or “sick” project, and all previous recovery efforts had been unsuccessful.
“Although the project had made significant physical progress, the contractor still failed to complete it within the stipulated timeframe despite repeated opportunities,” he said during a recent site visit to review the road’s status.
Originally scheduled for completion two years ago, Juanda who is also the Jemoreng assemblyman, stressed that prolonged delays have directly affected the needs and interests of local residents.
He emphasised that Jalan Kampung Bawang is a key infrastructure for the community as it also serves as an alternative route while also helping to mitigate the annual flooding in the area.
“The project is also expected to open up new land areas for potential development and boost local economic activities,” he said.
In light of the contractor’s failure, the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak issued a contract termination letter in early January.
Juanda expressed hope that the re-tendering process would be expedited so the project could resume without further delay, emphasising its urgent necessity for the people of Kampung Bawang.
“This project is a basic need for the community, and I hope the re-tendering process can be accelerated for the welfare of local residents,” he said.
Also present at the site visit were JKR Mukah representative Awang Dasuki Awang Dol and Matu Assistant District Officer Zaraina Sahari. — DayakDaily
