KUCHING, Sept 23: Police have confirmed that a viral 13-second video showing a group of men lifting an individual until he hit a pole was not a case of bullying but a birthday prank.
In a statement, Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the student, who was said to be the victim in the video, accompanied by his parents, lodged a police report today and denied being bullied.
“He explained the incident occurred on September 19 during his birthday celebration with fellow course mates and involved no coercion or abuse,” he said.
He added that a preliminary investigation by the institution also confirmed the act was an excessive prank, not bullying.
Following that, the institution has pledged strict action against the students involved, aged between 18 and 24, while the relevant ministry continues its investigation.
He added that the police have recorded statements from the institution’s representative, the parents, and all students involved. The case has been classified as No Further Action (NFA).
“The police take bullying cases seriously and will act firmly if new evidence of criminal elements emerges. The public was also advised against spreading the video or making unfounded speculation that could cause public concern,” he said. — DayakDaily
