MIRI, Feb 18: Bumiputera children should strive to master Mandarin as it represents, among others, a great way to understand Chinese cultures, said Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus.

“I encourage and urge Bumiputera pupils to pursue learning Chinese with all seriousness since the language (like other international languages) provides many opportunities in the present era,” she said at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Chung Hua Sungai Lumut’s Chinese New Year gathering today.

Also present was Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

The school has more than 40 pupils, and about 70per cent of them Bumiputeras and the rest Chinese.

At the function, Rosey, who is also Bekenu assemblyperson, and Lukanisman gave RM3,000 each for the school to hold their activities.

On the school’s proposed new building, Rosey hoped it would be completed as scheduled to replace the wooden block that is termite-infested.

Work on the new RM1.9 million initiative, which is in front of the current school block, has started. It would have 13 classrooms, a staff room, headmaster’s office, science laboratory, multimedia room, library and a small hall. — DayakDaily
