SARIKEI, March 3: Gold in Sarikei is sold cheaper?

About a decade ago, in order to increase its competitiveness, Sarikei businessmen tried to sell merchandise slightly cheaper than other towns in Sarawak to lure customers from other districts. At that time, they were able to do so due to cheaper rent, lower cost of living and the shared mentality to create a competitive edge among Sarikei business community.

Then the price of gold sold in Sarikei was sold RM2 to RM3 per gram cheaper than in Sibu, which is another RM2 to RM3 cheaper than in Miri, Bintulu and Kuching.

The rapid development in Sarikei has significantly boosted the local economy, largely driven by high-impact projects like the upgrading of the Jalan Pasi-Tanjung Manis road and the construction of an agropark. These developments are complemented by the establishment of a state-of-the-art collection, processing, and packaging centre, which has enhanced the region’s capacity to manage agricultural products more efficiently.

As a result of these transformative projects, Sarikei’s economic landscape has undergone a noticeable shift, driving increased prosperity and creating a more dynamic market, leading to an increase in rental and cost of living. Prices of items such as gold, fabric, and Chinese herbs, once known for being cheaper than other districts, may no longer be so.
