KUCHING, Aug 20: Stampin Resettlement Scheme residents have been left dismayed as irresponsible individuals turn a plot of land into a dumping ground, piling up all sorts of waste, including plastic bottles, plastic bags, and even office chairs.

The issue came to light after a complaint from a member of the public prompted a site visit by Michael Kong, special assistant to Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen.

On-site, Kong observed large amounts of rubbish scattered across the land, which is currently undergoing landfilling works by the landowner to fill its peaty soil with stones and bricks.

“During the visit, I met with a contractor working on the land and was able to get in touch with the landowner’s representative.

“Some members of the public had taken advantage of the ongoing works to dump waste illegally. While the individuals responsible remain unidentified, the landowner’s representative acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and assured that the rubbish would be promptly cleared,” he said in a statement today.

In a proactive step to prevent future dumping, he said the landowner has erected fencing around the site to prevent further dumping in the future.

Kong expressed his appreciation for the swift action and urged the public to dispose of rubbish responsibly, emphasising that illegal dumping not only creates an eyesore but also poses environmental and public health risks.

“Everyone should work together to ensure that our neighbourhoods remain clean, safe, and conducive for all,” Kong said, highlighting the importance of community responsibility. — DayakDaily
