SRI AMAN, Nov 20: A male inmate from Sri Aman Central Prison escaped by climbing a temporary gate behind Block Rahmat 3 at around 7.15 am today.
In a TVS news, Sri Aman District Police chief, Superintendent Demnis Bunyam, identified the escapee as 38-year-old John Sambang Sangau, who fled through an anti-climb gate while within the prison compound.
He said the inmate had previously been sentenced under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 on Oct 20, 2025, and was due to complete his sentence on Jan 24, 2026.
“Initial investigations revealed that the suspect escaped without a shirt, wearing only long green trousers,” he said in a statement.
The incident was noticed by on-duty staff, who immediately conducted a preliminary search but were unable to locate him. The prison authorities subsequently filed a police report at 8.34am at the Sri Aman Police Station.
Following the report, police launched Op Tutup, establishing a roadblock at KM7 on the Sri Aman–Kuching Road and mobilising officers from all district police stations to carry out Op Kesan.
“Assistance has also been requested from the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters’ K9 Unit and the General Operations Force Battalion 23 to track down the suspect,” he added. — DayakDaily
