Indonesian man hit with RM800 fine for not wearing face mask in public place

SIBU, Oct 21: An Indonesian man has been fined RM800 in lieu of seven days jail by the Magistrate’s Court today after he pleaded guilty to the charge of not wearing a face mask while in a public place.

The accused, Andilau Sharudin, 20, was caught by a police standard operating procedures (SOP) monitoring team at about 8am on May 29 for not wearing a face mask at a cafe in Kanowit.

In doing so, he had contravened Regulation 17 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2021.

The offence provides for a fine of not exceeding RM50,000 or a jail sentence of not more than six months or both if convicted.

In another case, a 56-year-old local man was slapped with a fine amounting to RM2,000 in default two months’ imprisonment for possessing a homemade shotgun without a valid licence.

The offence was committed at 4.30pm on March 26 this year at Rumah Andrew Balun in Nanga Ngu gun, Kanowit.

The accused, Beji Lawak, was charged under Section 8 (a) of the Firearms Act 1960. — DayakDaily
