KUCHING, March 11: Indiscriminate littering and uncollected rubbish is still an issue at Lorong 5, Jalan Sungai Tapang, says Democratic Action Party (DAP) man Michael Kong.

The Special Assistant to DAP Sarawak chief Chong Chieng Jen said as recent as Jan 13, 2022, he had written to Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) on the issue and the matter was reported in the local press.

He said although Trienekens did eventually clear the rubbish in the public bins, there was however no initiative from any of the personnel from MPP and/or Trienekens to collect and clear all the other rubbish lying around the bin area because the bins were too full after being unattended to for weeks.

“Till now, the litter is still there, after close to two months. During (Kota Sentosa assemblyman) Wilfred Yap’s visit to the said site in January 2022 with fellow councillors from MPP, he had the cheek to blame the residents for littering,” said Kong in a statement today.

Kong added that MPP and all the relevant authorities must set a good example by going down and clearing all the litter.

He held that any lack of civic awareness reflected a poor government and an ineffective education system.

“As such, MPP has to step up on its efforts to educate the public on the importance of maintaining public hygiene and cleanliness,” said Kong. — DayakDaily
