MIRI, Oct 21: The State government has been very proactive in environmental concerns by implementing environmental friendly policies over the years.

Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the government also emphasises on sustainable development.

Speaking at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Lutong’s environmental programme held at Piasau Nature Reserves (PNR), he said the people at large too need to be eco-conscious to protect the environment and this includes nurturing children from an early age.

“It is the way forward for the future, in order to protect our environment.  One way to change our habit is creating awareness amongst our people and inculcate good values in our young generation,” he said.

Ting lauded the Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak (NREB) for collaborating with SMK Lutong to organise the Lutong Environmental programme which he believed would further create environmental awareness especially among the students.

At the event, Ting also announced an allocation of RM10,000 to SMK Lutong to carry out its environmental activities and programmes.

Earlier on, Natural Resources and Environment Board of Sarawak’s (NREB) Environmental Quality controller Justine Jok Jau Emang said taking care and safe guarding of the environment is everyone’s concern and not the responsibility of only certain group of people.— DayakDaily
