SIBU, Sept 10: A Democratic Action Party (DAP) representative holds that the Sarawak Consultative Committee team should meet or it will defeat the purpose of its formation.
In a statement today, DAP Bukit Assek assemblyman lambasted Sarawak Consultative Committee spokesperson Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for assuming a what she called a lackadaisical and non-committal attitude by assuming that “everything is going fine” without probing for the full details of the on-going negotiation and to insist on its full participation in his capacity as the chairman of the negotiating team from the Consultative Committee.
“Datuk Abdul Karim should grasp the reality that in time to come, the people shall judge the Sarawak Consultative Committee negotiating team if they have honourably discharged the duty entrusted upon them to protect the state’s oil and gas matters.
“His declaration of no intention to meet and discuss on the progress and/or status of the negotiation reveals the alarming lack of commitment by the negotiating team.
“A question that begs to be answered is whether the Minister can recall the purpose for the formation of the negotiating team by the Consultative Committee on June 10, 2020,” said Chang.
She reminded that it was agreed and was the expectation of all members of the Consultative Committee to be kept abreast of all details of negotiation through their active participation and involvement with all parties involved.
To her, it was not acceptable to take a back seat in the negotiation to any other party involved, including the State government executive negotiating team, and wait to be informed of the terms only after all details of negotiations have been finalised.
“As it stands today, I, as a committee member and several other committee members of the Consultative Committee have not been briefed and updated on the on-going negotiations on the oil and gas matters in Sarawak.”
Chang said she had written to the chairman of the committee Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar who is also Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker to express her concern.
“I have also reminded the Consultative committee not to allow its authority and power given to it by the State Legislative Assembly on Nov 6, 2019 to be reduced to a mere rubber stamp of the executive actions by only coming into the picture after the negotiations have been completed.
“This would have been the most likely scenario if the Committee’s negotiating team continues to remain non-committal and refuses to play the role as of expected of it.”
She believed that the minister should be mindful of the fact that it is not merely about the payment of the forthcoming sales tax by Petronas but more of the fact that Sarawak’s rights and interests should remain intact throughout the whole negotiation, including when the terms of settlement was reached between Petronas and the State Government in the court cases.
It is indeed of grave concern that until now, the terms of settlement for the withdrawal of the appeal by Petronas over its failed judicial review application and the cross appeal by the State Government on the jurisdiction issue of the High Court have still not been fully revealed, she further reminded.
“I therefore call on the Minister and all members of the negotiating team to understand and appreciate the role they should play in the on-going negotiations through which they can restore the social and economic status of our State,” said Chang.—DayakDaily
