Illegal liquor, cigarettes worth RM55,000 confiscated

Contraband liquor and beer discovered inside the premises.

MIRI, Oct 24: General Operations Force (GOF) Battalion 12 personnel here on Tuesday raided an eatery at Centre Point Commercial Centre, seizing untaxed cigarettes and liquor worth RM55,000.

The premiseā€™s owner, aged 48, was also arrested for allegedly attempting to bribe the operations team with RM2,000 cash.

A total of 156 boxes of cigarettes, 77 bottles of liquor and 173 cans of beer were seized during the operation known as ā€˜Ops Libasā€™.


Miri GOF commanding officer, Superintendent Tan Hiap Seng disclosed this in a press statement on Wednesday morning.

He said, a Toyota Vios belonging to the owner was also seized as the operations team discovered illicit liquor and cigarettes inside it.

ā€œThe car was parked in front of the premises, and when the operations team inspected the vehicle they found bottles of various brands of liquors and cigarettes in it. They later proceeded into the premises and discovered more,ā€ said Tan.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for possessing forbidden goods/goods yet to approved by Customs and Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 for offering /giving gratification.

Tan added GOF Miri will continue the operation as part of their efforts to curb illegal activities.
