Igan MP’s appointment as chairman of national GLC marks historical first

KUCHING, May 16: Igan MP Ahmad Johnie Zawawi has described his appointment as a non-executive chairman of Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) a historical milestone for the Melanau community as he was the first to be appointed to such a post.

“What I can say is that this appointment is history because this is the first time a Melanau has been appointed as chairman of national GLC company.


“I hope to be able to carry out this trust and responsibility as best I can with the prayers of all the people in Igan parliamentary constituency in particular,” Ahmad Johnie told DayakDaily when contacted today.

He also expressed thanks and appreciation to the federal government, especially the prime minister and the minister of finance for his appointment effective May 13, 2020.

“God willing, and with the experience and support and cooperation of the Board of Management of IWK and the employees, we can achieve the mission and vision set by the IWK. I believe that with its commitment, IWK will become a credible and professional company that will become the pride of the nation,” he said.

IWK, a company owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated, is a national water treatment company responsible for developing and maintaining modern and efficient water treatment system in the country.

Ahmad Johnie, 58, is a former managing director of a renowned publishing company in Sarawak after leaving his job as a customs superintendent. He also has vast experience in plantation management, real estate management and the services sectors.

He is a political science graduate from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Ahmad Johnie is also a first-term MP after winning the Igan seat in the last general election. He succeeded former Igan MP Datuk Abdul Wahab Dollah.—DayakDaily
