KUCHING, Sept 16: Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar will take the necessary steps to inform the Election Commission (EC) about the vacant seat in N67 Jepak following the death of its incumbent Datuk Talib Zulpilip yesterday.
According to a news report from TV Sarawak (TVS) today, DUN deputy speaker Dato Idris Buang said as stipulated in the Sarawak State Constitution, it is Asfia’s responsibility to submit a notice to the EC about the vacancy.
“The Speaker after will inform the EC to issue orders and writs for the by-elections (PRK) because we have about three years left in the state assembly,” he was quoted by TVS as saying.
He added that the Sarawak Constitution requires a by-election to be held within 60 days from the date the vacancy notice is notified to the EC.
Jepak assemblyman Datuk Talib Zulpilip passed away yesterday (Sept 15) at the age of 72 after he was admitted to hospital on Thursday (Sept 14) due to kidney complications. — DayakDaily
