LAWAS, Nov 6: The iconic Bandar Lawas Bridge, featuring a design personally selected by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, was officially opened to the public today.
In a TVS news report, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the bridge was an important infrastructure project to improve connectivity between areas across the river in Lawas and the town centre.
“The bridge is approximately 642 metres long and cost around RM149 million to construct. We would like to record our appreciation and gratitude to the Sarawak Premier for his support and commitment in ensuring the project could be implemented.
“We submitted three bridge designs to the Sarawak Premier. After reviewing all three proposals, he selected the design that we see and enjoy today. The Sarawak Premier personally chose this design,” he said to reporters after the launch ceremony of the Bandar Lawas Bridge here today.
Elaborating further, Awang Tengah described the bridge as part of Lawas’ broader development plan, particularly to drive economic growth and establish a more comprehensive road network.
He said the bridge would also provide connectivity to the Northern Coastal Highway (NCH) project and the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR).
The infrastructure development is expected to strengthen connectivity between Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, and Kalimantan, while reducing travel time for land journeys.
Meanwhile, the NCH project package will also include two more major bridges: the Batang Trusan Bridge and Kuala Lawas Bridge. — DayakDaily
